Icon’s astonishing sacrifice that saved tennis

In 1970, women’s tennis was virtually nothing.

While the men took centre stage everywhere, the women were relegated to the back courts.

Pay and prize money? Also virtually nothing. Certainly not enough to survive on.

50 Women of Influence in Irish Sport – Aoife Clarke

AOIFE CLARKE

Aoife Clarke is the Communications and CSR Director at Lidl and has overseen the brand’s ongoing engagement with Ladies Football since the partnership first came to life in January 2016.

Having learned the basics of her trade through a short stint with Slattery Communications, she joined Lidl in 2008 and has risen through the business.

She was one of the speakers at our Women in Sport Conference at the Aviva Stadium in May and spoke eloquently about the positive impact the partnership has had for both the sponsor and the sport.

If you think back to the opening blast of the sponsorship, the ‘Ladyball’ campaign and the #SeriousSupport that has gone in since, it is no overstatement to say that Clarke has helped to redefine the way we look at Women’s Sport through a sponsorship lens.

FOX Bet Super 6 is a free-to-play contest where you pick the winners of all six marquee games with their margins of victory for a chance to win $100,000 in the NFL Sunday Challenge.

Last week’s big news was that we blinked and realized we were halfway through the NFL season. Time flies when you’re having football.

This week’s big news? Well, there’s a huge Week 10 clash between the Cowboys and Packers in America’s Game of the Week on FOX. All eyes will be on these iconic franchises when they take the field Sunday afternoon. We’d expect nothing less from a matchup featuring a quarterback on the mend in Dak and a quarterback at his wit’s end in Rodgers.

While we’re thrilled about tuning into that game, there are five other games that everyone needs to watch for a chance at Terry Bradshaw’s $100,000.

Vikings stake claim for playoff spot

By Matt Lechuga

For The Signal

The Valencia Vikings needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive coming into Friday night’s Foothill League season finale and they did all they could to earn their spot with a 40-17 win over Canyon at Valencia High.

Valencia (5-5, 3-3) used its balanced offensive attack to get ahead and stay ahead of a feisty Cowboys team, jumping out to an early 6-0 lead thanks to a 1-yard dive by senior running back Daniel Hernandez that was set up by a 26-yard pass from Trey Erickson to Jayboe Wilson. That was about it for offense in the first quarter as the teams would trade punts on their next six straight possessions.

However, the Vikings found their footing on the first play of the second quarter when Erickson hit Ralph Testa with a 60-yard pass down the middle of the field for a touchdown, pushing the Valencia lead to 13-0.

NBA roundup: Two Cavs top 40 points in OT win at Boston

Donovan Mitchell and Caris LeVert became the first Cleveland teammates to score 40-plus points in the same game since 2016, as their combined 82 points powered the visiting Cavaliers to a 132-123 win in overtime over the host Boston Celtics on Friday.

Mitchell shot 15-of-26 from the floor, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range, en route to his season-high 41 points. LeVert went 12-of-21 from the floor, 6-of-8 beyond the arc, and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line to match Mitchell's 41. It was also a season high for LeVert.

LeVert scored 11 points consecutively in the final 2:33 of the extra frame to fuel Cleveland's game-ending 11-2 run. The flourish sealed the Cavaliers' fourth consecutive win since losing their opener on Oct. 19 at Toronto.

Saugus beats Golden Valley 31-13

Centurions’ football (8-2, 4-1) won its regular season finale against Golden Valley (6-4, 3-3) Friday night at Canyon.

Saugus is now the outright Foothill League runner up while the Grizzlies fall into a three-way tie for third.

The Centurions were led by quarterback TJ Cataldi and now-running back Dario Sandoval.

Cataldi went 18 of 22 for 242 yards and accounted for two scores.

Sandoval is a typical threat in the Saugus pass rush and in the receiving corps. Friday night the senior took his first eight carries of the season for 38 yards and two touchdowns.

“It felt good,” said Sandoval. “I was practicing all week because we had injuries so I had to step it up. So I did my thing.”

Golden Valley had a good number of chances in the game but two first-half special teams turnovers led to quick Saugus points.
